Nawabshah / Shaheed Benazir abad
Nawabshah is a city in Shaheed Benazir Abad district of Sindh, Pakistan. The city is roughly the geographical center of Sindh, making it a major train and road transportation hub in the province. It is set in a lush agricultural region, and is famous for its sugarcane, mango and banana production. Many oil and sugar mills are also located in the area. Best time to visit is September to November or from February to early April.
Nawabshah was named after Syed Nawab Shah, son of Syed Nawaz Ali Shah, who migrated from the Sann district (Dadu) to Nawabshah with his family in 1881. Sakrand is about 18 km from Nawabshah city. It is rich in agriculture and business, exporting goods To Hyderabad, Sindh And Nawabshah. |

How to get there
Fly:
Fly to Sukkur or Karachi, and drive to Nawabshah. Nawabshah Airport is currently not open for commercial flights. |
Train:
Take a train to Nawabshah railway station, such as Tezgam, Shalimar, Khyber Mail. It takes 6 hrs from Karachi, and 18 hrs from Lahore. Railway Schedule. |
Bus:
From Karachi: Daewoo bus takes 5 hrs to Moro and 2hrs to Hyderabad. Then drive or take local bus to Nawabshah. Schedule: Daewoo website. |
Drive:
Drive 4 hrs north from Karachi, and 2.5 hrs south from Sukkur along N-5 highway. |
Sights
Thul Rukan is a Buddhist stupa. It is built of bricks with four tiers, each one smaller than the one below, surmounted by a dome. This archaeological and historical tomb is 60 ft high.

The historic necropolis of the Kalhora period is located close to Daulatpur. It is named after Mian Noor Muhammad, a king of Sindh who ruled for some 35 years (1719-1753).

Amri or Aamri is an archaeological site dating back to 3600 BC with the remains of a pre-Harappan fortified town. This site has multi-level occupation.

Chanhudaro is an archaeological site of the post-urban phase of Indus valley civilization. It was inhabited between 4000 and 1700 BCE.

Dalail Dero Fort is located between Sakrand and Nawabshah. The fort is privately owned by the families of Mir Bahars.

The ancient Shiva temple is a unique monument. There is an arched entrance, with detailed brick carvings and fresco paintings on the outer and inner walls.

The H.M. Khoja Memorial Library was renovated and converted into a public library in 2003. There is a beautiful park adjacent, with the Benazir Museum and Art Gallery.

The Tomb of Mir Shahdad is a historical heritage. Mir Shahdad Talpur is regarded as one of the finest military commanders of Sindh. This is a graveyard of the family members of Mir Shahdad.

Scenic forests and Sanctuaries
Deh Akro-II Desert Wetlands Complex extends over 205 sq km. It is a unique example of desert wetland ecosystem that hosts a variety of wildlife species.

Chotiari Wetlands Complex is surrounded on 3 sides by the Thar Desert sand and Nara Canal on the west and south. The reservoir comprises many fresh and brackish water bodies.

Pai Reserved Forest is part of the Indus eco-region, which has been identified as one of the 40 biologically richest eco-regions in the world by Global 200 Analysis.

Makhi Forest is named after the small bees which make honey inside the forest. It was once famous for its rich reserves of quality honey, wood and plants with medicinal values.
