The mazar of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto is situated at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, in Larkana District, Sindh, Pakistan. The mazar is notable for housing the graves of the Bhutto family and being the burial place of Zulfiqar, Murtaza, Nusrat, and Benazir Bhutto.
Construction
This was already the ancestral graveyard of the Bhutto family, and became more significant when Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was buried here in 1979.
Benazir Bhutto initiated the construction of the mausoleum, with the initial construction during 1993 to 1997 with architect Zaigham Jaffery. He visited Khomeini and Ataturk’s mazars to seek inspiration and also tried to incorporate elements from the Shalimar Gardens in Lahore. The revised design by Waqar Akbar Rizvi included five domes and four iwans like the Taj Mahal. The building is covered with white marble, and glazed tiles inscribed with calligraphy, fresco work and based on Sindhi Hala patterns have been used.
On the anniversary of the death of Benazir Bhutto, large crowds gather at the site.
